Second Harvest Food Bank
In collaboration with Second Harvest Food Bank, Coastside Hope receives, organizes and distributes 4.9 tons of food each month. Countless volunteers work to unwrap, sort, and organize a month’s supply of food and staples. On the third Thursday of each month, food bags are distributed to to over 200 families, senior citizens, and singles.
According to the Second Harvest Hunger Gap Study (2005), 70% more food is needed to ensure that everyone has enough to eat on a regular basis. In San Mateo County, more than 43,000 individuals, of which more than 4,000 are children, struggle to find enough food. Click here to read the entire study.
In an effort to meet the rising needs, Coastside Hope has increased its food distribution programs. We maintain a food pantry which provides emergency food and provisions on a daily basis. We also created holiday programs which provided over 250 supplemental food bags during the holidays. In total, we are able to help over 3,000 individuals on an annual basis.
Upcoming Holiday Food Programs
In partnership with 2nd Harvest food banks, Coastside Hope has begun preparations to put holiday dinners on the table for our Coastside clients.
- As of November 12, we began putting out collection barrels and picking up donated foods at Strawflower Safeway and will continue doing so through Thanksgiving and up to Christmas. During this season, our community donates large quantities of canned and packaged food goods which are used to stock out pantry and fill bags for needy clients who drop into the Coastside Hope office.
- On Tuesday, November 20th Coastside Hope, in partnership with 2nd Harvest food bank will distribute approximately 100 frozen turkeys and roaster chickens to needy Coastside clients from our warehouse in Princeton. We will additionally be supplying Safeway certificates help with the rest of the Holiday meal items.
