   Backpack Giveaway

Last year you provided over 300 children with
  much-needed backpacks & school supplies.
  The Coastside Backpack Program
is a team effort involving many community groups; we need your help again this year. You can donate money to the Holy Family Episcopal Church; drop off supplies at the Community United Methodist Church or the HMB Catholic Worker House; or share your time by helping fill backpacks on Saturday, August 13 at the Methodist Church. Families are screened to ensure there is a need and the child must be present to receive the backpack. Holy Family administers donated funds and ensures that all money goes directly to backpacks and supplies. Contact Keith Terry for a list of needed supplies.

Emergency Preparedness

Are Coastsiders
prepared for a major disaster? Imagine the scenario if a major earthquake hit one of the nearby fault lines. Downed power lines, useless cell towers, closed roads, and limited food and water supplies. And the inability to communicate with anyone out of the immediate area. Disaster preparedness is one of Coastside Hope's key concerns; we're the lead coastal emergency food distributor for the Second Harvest food bank. Our board members are actively looking for a second storage/shipping container for emergency food and supplies. We're also working with members of the Half Moon Bay Amateur Radio Emergency Services to install radios that will connect us to emergency communication networks.

Our Volunteers - Can't Say Enough

  Good  Things About Them!

We can't begin to give enough thanks to the folks

who volunteer at Coastside Hope. Providing our

programs and services wouldn't be possible without

them. Their gifts of time include handing out groceries at Brown Bag and Family Harvest, "adopting" families during the holidays, stocking our food pantry, providing household items for our Special Delivery program, community awareness activities through our Promotora program, and delivering groceries to home-bound seniors.

Would you like to join this group of generous souls? It's easy. Contact us to help in an existing program. Organize a food drive at work, school or in your neighborhood. Or drop off toiletries (sample sizes are great!), packages of diapers (large sizes are especially in demand) or basic household supplies at the Coastside Hope office. Let us know if you'd like a list of food or other items that are in high demand.

More information about our programs and how you can participate is available on our website - www.coastsidehope.org. Or just email Keith at keith@coastsidehope.org.

What's for lunch today?

In just three weeks our local kids will head back to school. New clothes and backpacks top most students' lists of 'must haves' but for a growing number of local families school lunches are also a concern. The number of hungry students is growing, a trend we see in the changing demographics of our clients. School lunches in the Cabrillo Unified School District are $4.00; this number isn't high for some of us but for others it's daunting. Some of our clients are unable to qualify for subsidized or free lunches, so we are always happy to accept donations of healthy single-serving food items for children's lunches.
